Short local Food supply chain model
🍅This diagram is a model of a localised short food supply chain for this region, and could link with other re-localised food systems that hold to sustainability values (e.g. on Vancouver Island). In this model, farmers, fishers, and other wild harvesters can make a diversity of marketing decisions supported by system infrastructure. They can choose selling direct to eaters, direct to primary and secondary processors, direct to retailers, and direct to distributors.
🥕It shows that distribution to community food programs can be built into production and processing as part of the system, so that high quality food is available for all.
🥬The top diagram shows where there are key infrastructure gaps in the supply chain at present. Public and private investment in food hubs across the region are playing a role in filling these gaps.
🍆Following the arrows, the model shows that options remain open within the local food supply chain for additional infrastructure and for several links into the distribution system. It indicates that waste reduction and waste management are integrated into the operational culture of each component consistent with a circular economy.
